Create A Video Player PSD

This design tutorial will show you how to create a clean, professional, video player PSD using Photoshop. This Video Player can be created with the tools and settings in Photoshop, you do not need any other resources. Hopefully you will find this Video Player useful.

Downloads
Before you begin this tutorial, you may want to download the completed PSD file or the Video/Movie image we will use in creating this Video Player:

Final Preview

Create a new document
1 To start this tutorial, we are going to create a new document with a width of 800px and a height of 495px.

Apply the background colour and noise affect
2 To complete the background we need to apply the colour #585752 using the Paint Bucket Tool (G), then apply a 3% Noise effect to the Background layer, (Filter > Noise > Add Noise…).

Create the video player background
3 The next step is to create the video player background layer. To do this, first create a new layer, then using the Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) create a selection 560px wide by 376px in height, then using the Paint Bucket Tool (G), fill the selection with the colour #222222. Finally, centre the video player background layer, like so:

Insert the Video/Movie image
4 Next, insert on a new layer the downloaded Video/Movie image you got at the start of this tutorial, or use your own image. The size for the image is 560px wide by 342px in height. Position the image so that it is at the top of the video player background layer, like so:

Video player base
5 We are now going to create the video player base, which is where all the controls will go. Start by creating a new layer, and then create a selection the width of the video player and the height of the gap left, and then fill the selection with the colour #ffffff. You should have something like this:

5.1 We now need to apply some layer style settings to the base layer we just created. To do this, right-click the base layer, then select ‘Blending Options’ from the menu list. You can then apply these layer style settings:

Gradient

So far your document should look something like this:

Create the play button
6 We are now going to create the Play Button symbol for the video player. Start by creating a new layer, and then set the foreground colour to #434343, and then select the Triangle symbol from the Custom Shape Tool (U) property box. Then create a 16px by 16px triangle like so:

6.1 Now we need to rotate the triangle counter-clockwise so that it looks like a play button. To do this select ‘Free Transform’ from the file menu, (Edit > Free Transform) the triangle should then have a box which appears around it. You can then right-click and select ‘Rotate 90 degrees CCW’ from the menu list.

6.2 Now we need to position the triangle layer so that it is centred vertically inside the video player base and 11px from the left edge of the video player, like so:

I have used a guide to help me

6.3 To finish the Play Button symbol, we need to apply these layer style settings to the layer:

Drop Shadow

Inner Shadow

Creating the timeline
7 The next set of steps are to create the timeline for the video player. Start by creating a new layer, then make sure the foreground colour is still set to #434343, then using the Rounded Rectangle Tool (U), create a rounded rectangle with a radius of 20px, 280px wide by 10px in height. You should have something like this:

7.1 Now position the Timeline layer so that it is centred vertically and 25px from the Play Button:

7.2 Now we need to apply the same layer style settings to the timeline layer, as we did the Play Button layer. You can quickly copy layer style settings and paste them onto another layer, by right-clicking the Play Button layer, and then select ‘Copy Layer Style’ from the menu list, and then right-click the Timeline layer and select ‘Paste Layer Style’ from the menu list। The Timeline layer should now have the same layer style settings, like so:

7.3 We now need to create the buffer bar which goes inside the Timeline layer we just created. To create this buffer layer, start by setting the foreground colour to #7e7e7e, and then on a new layer, create another rounded rectangle with a radius of 20px, 118px wide by 10px in height, like so:

7.4 Now we need to create the progress bar for the Timeline. Start by setting the foreground colour to #2792c3, and once again using the Rounded Rectangle Tool (U), create a rounded rectangle with a radius of 20px, 66px wide by 10px in height, like so:

7.5 To complete the progress bar, we need to add some layer style settings to the layer:

Inner Shadow

Inner Glow

Bevel & Emboss

Gradient

7.6 Now you need to add the time text next to the Timeline. You can do this using the Type Tool (T), use these text settings:

Font: Arial, Style: Regular, Size: 11pt, Anti Aliasing: Crisp

7.7 To finish the Timeline, we need to create the handle. This is very simple, set the foreground colour to #ffffff, then on a new layer, and create a 14px by 14px circle using the Ellipse Tool (U), then apply these layer style settings:

Drop Shadow

Inner Glow

Stroke

To complete the handle, create another circle on a new layer this time 4px by 4px. Then copy the layer style settings from the bigger circle, and then paste them on this new smaller circle. Then make sure that the small circle is centred inside the larger circle. That is the timeline complete.

Volume controls
8 The next set of steps are to create the volume controls for the video player. Start by creating a new layer and set the foreground colour to #434343, and then select the sound symbol from the Custom Shape Tool (U) property box and create a symbol 18px wide by 15px in height, finally position this symbol so that it is centred vertically in the player base and 23px from the Timeline text, like so:

8.1 Now copy the layer style settings from the Play Button and then paste them on the Sound Symbol layer, like so:

8.2 The next step is to create the sound tracker bar in a new layer. Start by selecting the Rounded Rectangle Tool (U) and then create a rounded rectangle with a radius of 20px, 70px wide by 10px in height. Make sure it is centred vertically and 10px from the sound symbol. Finally paste the same layer style settings as the Play Button symbol.

8.3 To complete the Volume Controls, we need to create a little icon or handle for the volume bar we just created. Create a new layer and then set the foreground colour to #ffffff, and then using the Ellipse Tool (U), create a circle 9px wide by 8px in height. Finally position the circle so that it is centred vertically in the volume bar and to the right side, like so:

Full screen icon
9 The next part we need to create is a symbol which will represent the full screen button. Create a new layer and set the foreground colour to #434343, and then select the Custom Shape Tool (U) and create a symbol like so with a width of 16px and a height of 16px. To complete the symbol, paste the same layer style settings as the Play Button symbol and make sure that it is centred vertically and 11px from the right.

Line Breakers
10 To complete this tutorial we are going to create 3 line breakers which will go between each of the control buttons on the video player. To create these line breakers, first create a new layer, then using the Line Tool (U), create a line 18px in height with the colour #434343. Then create a second line the same height with the colour #ffffff, then position them both together and reduce the opacity of both layers to 30 %. Finally position both layers between the Play Button and the Timeline like so:

10.1 Now you need to duplicate both the line break layers, by right-clicking the layers and selecting ‘Duplicate Layer’ from the menu list. You can then create the other two line breaks and align them in between the other controls like so:

That is the tutorial complete. Thanks for reading and following along, be sure to comment and download the file.
