  • Open Adobe Photoshop if you haven't already.

Part II : Scanning

  • Under the File Menu choose "IMPORT > WIA Support. This will open the scanning software that works via Photoshop.

  • Follow the steps to select your scanner

  • Select your DPI (the "resolution" of the image you need, as measured in dots per inch). Recommended DPI:
  1. 72 for web or screen use (including PowerPoint slides)
  2. 300 for basic 1 to 1 printing
  3. 300+ for enlarged prints

  • Click "Preview." Wait for scanner to perform the "preview" scan.

  • Use the "selection tool" to choose the area in the preview to scan.
  • You can make make other changes (e.g., brightness, contrast, color balance, etc.) to a scanned image after it has been imported into Photoshop.
  • Click Scan. Go stick your head in the fridge, it might be a while depending on the DPI selected. The image will open as 'Untitled document' in Photoshop.
  • Resize the image in Photoshop. Select "Edit" menu, and click on "Image Size." The size will be enormous so try to get something manageable 1280x1024 range is what I shoot for.
  • Don't worry about how it looks right now, you can adjust and clean it up in Photoshop.

Part III : Saving the file in Adobe Photoshop

Specify a file format. Recommended file formats:

  • For the web: .jpg for photos, .gif for non-photo images.
  • For high quality prints (i.e outputting to the printer) - .png or .tiff
