Creative text using lines
In this tutorial i want to show you how to be creative using lines.
You will learn how to set up a piece of text and apply hard lines and soft curved lines to it.
Also i explain how to use photoshop action on a smart way.
<< Click on image to see example.
Scroll down to begin this tutorial.
Create a new document.
Size: 1800x1000.
Give the background the color
#0c0b0b
Create a new layer and call this "gradient".
I chose a pink / purple like color for my gradient.
Choose your own cool gradient and go to step 4.
Important is to give the gradient layer the 'overlay' blending mode.
Type in your text.
I used the text 'javildesign' and the font i used is 'Franchise'.
This is not really necessary, but i rasterized my text layer.
!Important!
Give the new folder the 'Color Dodge' blending mode.
In this new folder we going to create a new layer. Call this layer 'lines'.
In this layer we are going to draw the lines.
Select a normal brush, size 4px.
Step 9 - [optional] Action! [ALT+F9]
Record some action to speed up the process!
I created 2 actions:
- a 3px action
- a 4px action
Steps:
- Draw an example pentool path*!
- Create new action.
- Call it Brush Line 3px.
- Record!
- Select brush
- Set brush size to 3px [right mouse]
- Right mouse click on pentool path and choose 'stroke path'.
- Choose 'Brush' and also tick 'simulate penpressure'. Hit ok.
- Stop the recording.
For the 4px brush make a new action and repeat the steps, only choose 4px brush to record.
*
Give the text layer a little opactiy.
Then select the 'lines' layer and start to use the pentool path [P].
Make sure the color for the brush is pure white [#FFFFFF].
If you have drawn a pentool path, hit the PLAY button of your action window.
This way you save a lot of time*, cool huh?
*see step 9 and 15!
Be creative and dare to make nice curves around the letters.
I really want to show you how to create nice lines.
So follow my [pentool] path if you having trouble to get nice looking lines.
Practice is the best way to learn!
Just dare to put a line somewhere, and play around with the pentool.
Nice effect isn't it?
I use the 4px brush for the 'hard' edge of the letters. The 3px brush i use for the curves and outskirts.
Combine hard edge lines with
soft curved lines.
The letter 'S' is a good example of curved lines and hard edged lines.
I think it is important that the photoshop beginner really can see what i have ben doing, so in this example i, again, show what i did to create this effect.
A few more letter to go and then we are finshed setting up the lines for the text.
This is the output so far.
But we are not finished yet.
Let's create some more lines!
Make a new layer and call this layer 'soft lines'.
Be creative on this layer and draw all kind of curved lines with the 3px and also try to use the 4px!!
<< my output!
Then create a new layer and call this layer 'hard lines'.
In this layer try to create some cool 'hard' lines like i did in this example.
I used the ruler-system to keep some lines in that range. See?
Hold CTRL and click on the layer thumbnail in you layers windows.
This way we create a selection of the text. HOLD this selection!
Create a new layer and call this layer 'fibers'. Put this in the folder, but completely at the bottom.
<< First, select a white foreground and black background color like shown in the example.
Second, go to filter -> Render -> Fibers and copy over these settings.
Go to filter -> Brush Strokes -> Dark Strokes.
Copy over these settings, or do what you think that will look cool.
Go to filter -> Artistic -> Sponge.
Copy over these settings, or do what you think that will look cool.
Go to filter -> Artistic -> Poster Edges.
Copy over these settings, or do what you think that will look cool.
Give the [white] spots a little exposure.
Go to Select -> Color Range
Use the eyedropper and choose the whitish color which you find at the inside of the letters.
Go to Select ->Inverse to inverse the selection.
After you have done that, hit delete on your keyboard to delete the unwanted parts.
You can now deselect the selection.
Right mouse click on the 'fibers' layer and select 'blending mode'.
Tick 'Bevel and Emboss' and copy over these settings.
My layer window, to give you more clarity of the project.
